an average day
Today was a pretty normal and very relaxing day. Nothing in any way strange or culturally stressful happened today (yippee!). So, I thought it’d be a good day to make a list of “things I did today that I probably wouldn’t have done if we lived in the U.S.” Enjoy.
- watched Saturday morning cartoons with Em in Spanish
- rushed to take a shower because we thought the water was about to be turned off for the day (which actually doesn’t happen until tomorrow)
- checked to see how much the mold has grown in a cabinet in our kitchen
- watched my wife be approached by an egg salesperson at a large grocery store
- bought a large drink and popcorn at a movie theater for only $4
- used a key to lock or unlock a door or gate a total of 29 times (actual number, not an estimate)
-walked to a grocery store
- bought a newspaper for 200 colones (40 cents)
- paid for the newspaper by cutting in front of an elderly man, who had a lot of groceries and was accompanied by someone else that was still shopping for more things for him - this one may seem a little cruel, but actually, it’s a pretty common thing at this particular store at least, so I’m pretty sure it would have been culturally insensitive of me to NOT cut
- 4 taxi rides - wearing a seat belt just 1 time
- carried an umbrella everywhere we went
- revelled in the novelty of drinking ice tea with actual ice at the Gorniks
-spoke Spanish to my wife and daughter, among others

Nice list. I’m impressed that you actually counted the times you unlocked a door/gate.
I think I was only able to count them, because it was significantly less than a normal day
