Day 1

Today was an exhausting day.  After a 10 1/2 hour flight, we arrived in Buenos Aires at 9 something AM.  Brian Gornik and Rich Elledge were there to welcome us and get us to LaPlata.  We were greeted at our “home” by Tara, Malachi, Elijah, and Ezekiel Gornik, Jill and Emerson Elledge, and Nate, Deb, Ellie, Scott, and Lucy Dunlevy.  We all had salad and empanadas for lunch.  We were left to settle in and get comfortable before having orientation.  During orient[Edit]ation we went over some basics to cultural do and don’ts of Argentina, while experiencing mate.  This is a tea-like drink.  Only everyone drinks out of the same “straw”.  It is a social/cultural thing.  Turned out to be very good.  Will have to look for some to take home.  We had a short break for merienda, which is a time for….well…let’s say…a late snack.  As in most european countries, they eat dinner LATE…like 9 nor 10PM.  So this little snack keeps the starvation feeling away.  During this time, I also went to introduce myself and Gary to Toby, Dunlevy’s beagle pup!  Made me a bit lonesome for my dog, Macy.

We then came back together for some prayer and study.  We did alot of praying to God, renouncing any fear we might be feeling, that would get in the way of accomplishing what we needed to do this week.  This was a bit difficult…opening up fully with others that you just met and aren’t 100% sure about.  Really is difficult to admit your fears out loud…with your own voice.  I can only say that God gave me the courage to let it out.  Speaking it aloud, with others, felt like a release.  Like God said, “I just wanted you to say it Kellie, make it real for you so that you would turn to me and give it up”.  That alone eased the fear.  Embracing faith was  awesome…it was like saying, “SATAN, get behind me…cuz I am covered by God”.  We also rejected self and embraced the community.  Basically saying that we weren’t here for ourselves…that it was all about God all about what He wanted to do through us here…in this country, in this city, on these streets.

We ended the evening with dinner.  It was like a buffet, where all the cheese, veggies, etc were self serve and the waiters brought the selection of meats to your table and sliced you off a piece of whatever you wanted.  Options were many different cuts of beef, chicken, pork.  Dessert was Flan con creme….YUMMY!

It truly was a tiring day…but it was a beautiful day!  Looking forward to what God wants of me tomorrow!

Good night all!
